I have been in the field of mental health since 1983, first as an art therapist working with children in residential treatment followed by doing expressive therapy with adolescents and young adults in a private psychiatric hospital.
I am an art therapist (ATR) with board certification (ATR-BC). I have worked in a number of varied settings, including state-funded non profits for child abuse and neglect, counseling centers (including the Theodore Reik Consultation Center in NY) and independent practice. My experience includes working with children, adolescents, families,
couples and adults.
I earned a PhD in clinical psychology from The Union Institute in Cincinnati, OH, and graduated from the National Association for Psychoanalysis in New York City, NY. I have experience teaching master's level students and supervising their master's thesis and projects in Art Therapy. I began my teaching career in Fine Arts at the university level before I began a career transition from the arts to the field of psychology.
I was president of The George Whitmore Foundation, a non-profit in New York City that received a grant to create a pilot program that became the first deaf hospice in the U.S. at a major medical center in New York City. I have been in independent practice in Oregon since 2001. I have earned certificates in Sports Psychology (JFK University), Geriatric Mental Health (University of Washington) and Mindfulness Training.
As a life-long artist, I continue to create art and encourage creativity and expressive arts when it is relevant to my clients. I am currently incorporating mindfulness training as a method to relieve stress, chronic conditions and foster positive attitudes leading to enhanced coping skills, performance, wellness and creativity.
