After my post doc with Albert Ellis (the grandfather of cognitive behavioral therapy) I wanted to follow in his footsteps, i.e., to not only help people feel better but to help them get better. I work with each client to help them achieve their goals by getting them to identify, recognize, dispute, and eventually restructure those self-sabotaging, self-defeating beliefs, which lead to dysfunctional behaviors, and emotions. I try to use, as well as to encourage my clients to try to use, a lighthearted and flexible approach to life's adversities.
I have found that my own wide-ranging interests (cross-cultural issues, spiritual growth, theater) and experiences (Zero G, burlesque comedy, acting and directing, 42+ years of marriage, parenthood, grandparenthood, college professorship) all come in handy in my work with clients. Nothing is wasted.
