Dr. Michael Shapiro is Director of Behavioral Medicine at Duke Medical School’s Southern Regional Area Health Education Center, where he participates in the education and training of physicians going through a 3-year residency program in Family Medicine. He also provides direct clinical psychological services to patients in the SR-AHEC family medicine clinic, as well as to inpatients at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders such as attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, autism, and closed-head trauma. He also conducts forensic assessments involving child custody, parental fitness, competence to stand trial, and other litigation issues. Dr. Shapiro obtained his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Neuropsychology at the University of Georgia in 1984. He interned in the Department of Pediatric Neurology at the Medical College of Georgia and was in private practice for 30 years before assuming the Behavioral Medicine directorship at SR-AHEC. Dr. Shapiro is a Board Certified Forensic Examiner and a Registered Custody Evaluator. He holds Diplomate status in the American Board of Vocational Neuropsychology, the American Board of Psychological Specialties, the Professional Academy of Custody Evaluators, and the American Board of Forensic Medicine. He has been published in journals such as the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology and the Journal of Developmental Neuropsychology. Dr. Michael Shapiro and his wife, Dr. Mary Shapiro, lecture extensively (both domestically and abroad) on topics related to child psychology, parenting, marriage, adoption, and mental health issues in a Christian context.
