I am rarely surprised by the variety of problems we can have as human beings. So, I actively and eagerly try to understand your difficulties and the ways they affect you. To begin, I can help you to look at your problems with a certain curiosity, after all, therapy is a collaborative process, not something done to you. At the same time, I should be able to guide you to develop solutions to the problems you face. A psychologist should be dedicated to learning and practicing the most current and scientifically-supported treatments for a variety of conditions in order to help you reach those solutions. That means being able to utilize clinical research in actual practice. It also means being able to translate into an effective intervention for you.
I specialize in cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. There are many CBT treatment protocols that have been developed that are proven to work for certain conditions. Those protocols help you learn and practice specific skills that you can bring to bear on the problems you face. Indeed, even if your problems don't fit neatly into one of those conditions, learning and practicing new skills is the essence of therapy. I don't believe that any therapist can be an expert at treating all problems and all people, so I will refer you to a colleague if I know that there is a more capable expert to help you.
Clients who come to meet with me usually find that I am supportive, non-judgmental, and very easy to talk to. Most people will be pleasantly surprised to find that I don't fit their preconceived ideas about therapists. I've heard many clients say, "You seem like a regular guy". You can also expect me to be very active in therapy assessing, teaching, and motivating you to practice new ways of thinking and responding in order to help you reduce distress and change problem behaviors. I've got a job to do, you've got a job to do and together we will get it done.
