I am a licensed health psychologist with a specialization in chronic pain. I was trained in classic CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) at Stony Brook in NY. I am fellowship trained in Behavioral Medicine. I have worked in rehab settings, hospitals, and outpatient settings. Currently, I am the Clinical Director and owner of Southern Behavioral Medicine Associates in Hattiesburg MS. We service MS, LA, and AL, and have had clients seek treatment from other states as well.
I am an evidence-based practitioner in everything that I do. Over time, my approach to assessment and treatment has expanded beyond CBT to include other methods, including acceptance based techniques, meditation, and problem solving approaches. I remain heavily influenced by CBT as it offers a biopsychosocial framework to consider the "whole person," which is very important to helping others overcome obstacles and recover from significant life changes.
I assess and treat a variety of disorders including severe trauma, work injury, depression, anxiety, panic attacks and medical challenges such as chronic pain and traumatic brain injuries. About 50% of my practice is devoted to forensic work, including work injury, independent medical opinions, record reviews and expert testimony.
My practice has a unique focus on rehabilitation, and houses the Pain Rehabilitation Program, a 20 day, 8 hour daily program that combines intensive physical therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy to help patients restore their lives and return to work or activities given up due to chronic pain, and the related problems of sleep loss and depression that often follow. The Pain Rehabilitation Program has many staff including a yoga therapist, a massage therapist, masters level therapists, vocational rehab, and a medical director.
I am a frequent speaker on pain management, opioid prescribing, pain coping skills, professional burnout and the value of mental health treatment for payers and workers compensation.
