Dr. Betsy Shoenfelt, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Western Kentucky University, is a performance psychologist with 30+ years of experience working to achieve excellence in high demand performance contexts including sports, military, and industry. Her academic training is in industrial-organizational (IO) psychology, applied statistics, and sport psychology. She is a licensed IO Psychologist, a Fellow in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), a Certified Mental Performance Consultant®, a Fellow with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, and a member of the USOC Sport Psychology and Mental Skills Registry. Her IO work focuses on selection, EEO issues, organizational justice in team settings, and performance management. Betsy’s sport psychology work has a performance orientation and relies heavily on her IO training and research. At WKU, she teaches graduate courses in Organizational Psychology, Advanced Training, EEO Law, Leadership, and Professional Issues; she directs IO graduate students in internships and thesis research. For more than 30 years, she has developed and implemented programs to enhance performance in business, industry, government, education, and sports. Betsy’s experience in applied sport psychology includes working with teams and individually with coaches and athletes to achieve performance excellence in competitive situations through training mental skills, team building, and applying the science of performance excellence to improve component skills. She has worked with basketball teams that competed in three NCAA Final Fours and one national championship, volleyball teams that have made twelve NCAA tournament appearances, as well as with football teams, swimmers and divers, baseball players, and golfers. Betsy has developed and delivered mental skills training workshops for intercollegiate athletes in basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, and golf.
