Focused exclusively on clinical practice, Dr. Figley began practicing as a member of the faculty at Purdue University in 1995. He served as a member of the faculty of marriage and family therapy program and as senior practitioner and supervisor the Purdue University Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic. He later established the Psychosocial Stress Research Program. The Program established the Family Trauma Center. When he moved his family to Florida in 1989 from Indiana he joined his colleagues in the Florida State University's Interdivision Ph.D. Program in Marriage and Family. He was licensed in Indiana and then in Florida where he established the Green Cross Academy of Traumatology, the Traumatology Institute, the Psychosocial Stress R&D Program, and revised the School of Social Work's. When he and his family moved to New Orleans in 2008 and left his academic position at Tulane University in New Orleans he brought much of his programs and courses as well as his research initiatives within the Traumatology Institute. At Tulane he became the first holder of the Paul Henry Kurzweg Distinguished Chair in Disaster Mental Health and Distinguished Professor, School of Social Work. His practice has expanded to organizations. He is currently the Chair of the APA Interdivisional Task Force on the Pandemic. He is publishing three books in 2020: Combat Social Work (Oxford) by Figley, Yarvis & Thyer; Mental, Physical and Social Dimensions of Health Equity and Wellness among U.S. Indigenous Peoples: What is Known and Next Steps (Taylor & Francis); Psychiatric Casualties: Why the Military Ignores the Full Cost of War (Columbia University Press) by Russell & Figley.
